Question of the Day: What's Your Favorite Experience?

With October comes Houston and the thought of magnificent quilt shows and malls and classes and merchandise and and nirvana. The question isn't just about Houston, but was sparked by this mega show.

Today's question asks about your favorite or most memorable, endearing, (or embarrassing) quilt show memory. Or perhaps an epiphany or encounter at a quilt show that changed your life or your art?

One of my favorite stories, I've recounted in an early blog and may even have repeated it a few times. I think of it as one of my 'Real Men' series of stories. My husband has been excellent fodder for several essays sold to Christian Science Monitor and other markets. So briefly tell me your stories!

Today's photo was taken at the Cabin Fever Quilt Show in Orlando in January, 2009.

I read a lot of quilters' blogs and I sometimes invoke my photographic memory for faces but I can't always remember where I've seen someone or what their name is!

There was one woman at IQF last year that I kept seeing in all the aisles and exhibits and I just knew I should know her name... I guess she noticed me staring at her as I tried in vain to place her face and finally she glared at me angrily as though to say... "get outta my face!"

I looked away, she was definitely no one to trifle with. I'll try not to be so paparazzo-ish this year.

Thanks Diane! I love this. I am forever searching for names and connections to familiar faces. So glad I'm not alone. :) Maybe you should be MORE paparazzo-ish and snap her photo so you can take it home and research or post it with a "Who is this woman?" heading. :)

My most memorable moment was just recently at Quilt Festival Long Beach. I walked through the giant doors to see my own quilt staring me in the face! My beloved cheetah quilt dead center flanked by glorious quilts on either side! I was speechless & weeping! Here's my story:

Thanks Stacy! Isn't that everyone's dream to see their work appreciated and in such a visible way! What a cool blog, too.

Hi Dawn
Who would have thought that my most memorable moment would be trumped so soon? I just found out that the Cheetah quilt was accepted into Lark Books "500 Art Quilts" book that will be published spring of 2010! Truthfully, I was opening the letter on my way to my car and had to re-read it like 10 times!!!

I was careful this year at the Houston Quilt Festival not to repeat an embarrassing moment from last year... the way it happened was I walked into a class that I wasn't enrolled in just to say hello to the teacher and ask if I could see her sample book. As it turned out I was called on the carpet (literally) for being a "lurker". Oh my!

Oh Sharon! That's awful. Thanks for the lesson of what NOT to do. Lurker! Who knew? Well, I guess you and now we do! Hope this year's classes were fun and helpful.
